An FAQ on Women’s Ski Jackets

Ahead, our team of seasoned ski experts dish out the 411 on women’s ski jackets so you’re well-prepared before hitting those slopes.

What are the benefits of wearing a ski jacket?

First things first, let’s explain why you should wear a ski jacket in the first place. It sounds obvious — for skiing, right? — but there are key benefits to understand, differentiating this outerwear staple from the rest.

“Ski jackets provide insulation and help keep you warm in cold weather conditions, allowing you to enjoy skiing comfortably,” Ava Sunshine, professional alpine skier for Stifel U.S. Alpine Ski Team, told The Post. “They also offer protection against wind, snow, and moisture, ensuring that you stay dry and comfortable throughout your skiing adventures.”

What types of ski jackets can I buy online?

According to Sunshine, some common types include insulated ski jackets and shell jackets.

“Different brands offer different benefits,” she elaborates. “Insulated ski jackets provide warmth with built-in insulation, making them suitable for colder climates. Shell jackets, are lightweight and offer versatility allowing you to layer underneath.”

What should be worn with a ski jacket?

Additional items to pick up — according to both Sunshine and Sargent — include base layers, winter sport pants, gloves, a neckie, helmet and goggles.

What to look for when buying a ski jacket, according to professionals

“Fit is the most important part of the jacket, [along with] protection from the elements and warmth and style to match your personality are all important elements in choosing a jacket,” Sargent notes.

What’s more, be sure to purchase a ski jacket from a reputable brand (like those we listed above). “I’ve had jackets from brands in the past that throughout the season start getting slight rips and loose insulation,” Sunshine reflects.

You’ll also want to make sure the jacket is waterproof or at least water-resistant to keep you dry in snowy or wet conditions. “Look for jackets with good insulation,” she adds. “Warmth is your friend and most important trait in my opinion.” Consider the functionality to make sure you can move well, too.

What materials are ski jackets typically made from?

There are many technical materials which are used to protect you from the elements, according to Sargent. “You should keep your eye open for the material and styles which will give you the most protection,” he suggests.

Common materials include nylon, polyester, and Gore-Tex. “Nylon and polyester are often used for the outer shell, providing water resistance and durability,” Sunshine explains. “Gore-Tex is a breathable membrane that is both waterproof and windproof, commonly used as a protective layer in ski jackets.”

Above all else, shoppers should look for jackets with quality materials that are known for their weather resistance and durability.

Should I size up or down in ski jackets?

“Sizes typically run the same as your regular fit size,” Sargent shares. “Some may size up or down depending what they will wear underneath.”

Sunshine also recommends sizing up for layering. “As a racer, most of us choose to size up because of the suit and gear we often wear underneath,” she elaborates. “But, it also allows for greater flexibility and comfort.”

What’s the difference between a ski jacket and a snow jacket?

The terms ‘ski jacket’ and ‘snow jacket’ are often used interchangeably, as they serve a similar purpose of providing warmth and protection in snowy conditions,” Sunshine says. “However, some people may differentiate them based on style or specific features.”

In other words, both jackets can be suitable for skiing; just know the characteristics you’re looking for and go off that.

Are down and synthetic jackets better for skiing?

Much like the technical materials used for the exterior of a jacket, there are many technical insulations which will keep you warm and comfortable. Both down and synthetic jackets can be suitable for skiing, depending on personal preference and specific requirements.

“Down jackets offer excellent warmth-to-weight ratio and compressibility, making them ideal for colder conditions,” Sunshine says. “Synthetic jackets, on the other hand, are often more water-resistant and can still provide insulation even when wet.”

Is a puffer jacket warm enough for skiing?

According to Sunshine, puffer jackets are her personal favorite. “They are both comfortable and warm which are my two favorite things, in addition to looking classic,” she shares.
